Beni Ourain

Beni Ourain Berber rugs are hand knotted in the north eastern Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco. They are made by women of the Beni Ourain and surrounding tribes. The main purpose of these high piled shaggy rugs are to isolate against the cold floor in tents and houses. Beni Ourain people live in a rather high altitude and nights get cold there even in summer time. The long woolen fiber of Beni Ourain rugs hold back the warm air and can be used as a plaid to sleep on or a sleeping bag.

Typical for Beni Ourain rugs is a yellowish / beige wool white color - this is the color of natural wool. It is never snow white as sometimes seen on images. Also the design is usually made of brown natural sheep wool as there are no sheep that are really black.

The construction of a Beni Ourain rug is made in the traditional Berber Knot. Between the rows of knots there are 4 - 8 threads of woolen weft. The warp of Beni Ourain rugs is also made of wool.
